ROMANCE COVER MODELS: OUT OF MY REACH~

First, I want to say again how excited I am to sign with Decadent Publishing!

The novella that was accepted is called, "MY VAMPIRE COVER MODEL". I had to do a little research before I tackled the subject. I was inspired by Cover Model of the moment Paul Marron, who went on tour with Paranormal Romance best-seller Kresley Cole. My brain began to spin: What if the model posing as a vampire really was —a vampire? A couple of weeks later, I had the short novella completed.

For research, I read many blogs from people who showed up at the events and I also read a lot of interviews with Romance cover models to get a 'feel' for their motivation.

After reading these interviews, I came to one conclusion: I will never attract a romance cover model.

Just about everyone of them love the outdoors. Hiking! Camping! Rock Climbing!

Forget it. I hate the outdoors. HATE. It started at age 12 when I went to Girl Guide (girl scout in U.S.) summer camp. Of all the tents, only ours leaked. We had to sleep for two nights in a spider infested woodshed. You haven't lived until you've found a dead spider in your ass-crack. Needless to say when my parents showed up at the end of two weeks to get me, I fell to my knees in front of them, sobbing my eyes out, pleading for them to take me home.

My parents were born and raised city-dwellers and I was brought up in the suburbs. So there was no camping in my childhood. Hell, we didn't even own a BBQ. I tried it again with my Hubs in our early twenties. Again, it rained so hard the tent collapsed.  Never again. I don't even like sitting on the deck for very long. Bugs try to fly up my nostrils? I'm back in the house.

LONE EXCEPTION: I love the beach. If said cover model wants to take me to the beach where a cool ocean breeze keeps the bugs away, I can sit there for hours.

Next thing these guys like: Exercise and Sports.

Forget it. Back when I was young, slim and svelte I tried a myriad of sports. Judo, Tennis, Field Hockey. HATED it.  So I won't be joining said cover model in Kick-Boxing and Cardio Workouts. Spending six hours in the gym just doesn't appeal to me. Though I love watching baseball, Go Red Sox!

Which leads me to the next point. All these guys want a woman who is fit, disciplined and beautiful, inside and out. Yikes, I strike out again. I'm middle-aged, overweight and not really disciplined. Unless said cover model wants a chubby cougar type who can whip up gooey Mac and Cheese in a heartbeat, I'm ready! If not, I'm toast. (hey, I can make that, too!)

Beautiful? I've been called cute, even pretty once or twice, but that's as high as it goes. I'm no raving beauty. Also, I can be snarky and sarcastic and a tad vindictive when pushed. I'm a cancer, so I love to cuddle and watch old movies. I think one model liked that, so Jimmy Thomas, I'm your 'cuddle and watch movies girl'!

So in conclusion, I really don't have the prerequisites to attract a cover model. Neither does the heroine in my upcoming novella, MY VAMPIRE COVER MODEL. Deanna is cute, not a raving beauty, nor is she tall and slim. She works in a department store. Dean charms Burn the Cover Model nonetheless. I had a lot of fun writing this and already my brain is cooking up a plot for MY HIGHLANDER COVER MODEL, lol!
Thanks to Decadent Publishing for giving my story a chance~

  1. Oh, Karyn, you crack me up! I can totally relate. No need to give me reasons why as I am, myself, so not an outdoor person. When the warm weather is here, everyone wants to eat outside on a terrasse. Me? Nuh Uh, I don't eat bugs... or dust! Wanna do things indoor? Please sign me up! I just recently discovered Paul Marron and Jimmy Thomas (I know I'm a late bloomer). I absolutely LOVE their portfolio as cover model! Congratulations! Cannot wait to read it.

    1. I so admire the discipline these guys have, and all their varied activities. But yes, so not me. I did try, but the outdoors is not for me! You want me to sit outside? Get me one of those screened gazebos! :D So glad you discovered Jimmy and Paul, they are in my top three (along with Nathan Kamp) All three of these guys seem grounded, smart and all round nice guys! (Not that I know them personally!) Thanks for commenting Hai-Yen!

  2. LMAO! I'm right there with you Karyn!

I'd rather watch sports *wagging eyebrows* than participate any day. Although, I do like camping and fishing. No hiking; how about a nice stroll and taking a break on that large rock and basking in the sun for a while? LOL!!! I do like the outdoors and harvest what comes out of my garden, so, I'm hell on wheels in the kitchen too! Bugs don't bother me much with most of the amphibians being friends of a gardener. Yeah, I can be a bit brutal when someone gets on my bad side - but what do you expect from a USMC Veteran and a Scorpio?

Love, love, love, did I say LOVE that pic of Paul!

    2. Artemis, lol! Contact sports *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

Good for you for enjoying the outdoors! Oh, that is another things I tried, gardening. Nope. The hubs took to it though, thank the Gods, so we have some decent shrubbery and lilac bushed and the like.

Burn, my vampire cover model, wears this exact outfit at his book appearance. And I didn't see this picture until after I submitted! Love Paul Marron, best cheekbones in the biz. Abs are pretty good too. ;D Thanks for commenting Artemis!

  3. Oh my gawd, Karyn, we are sisters-from-other-misters. I was nodding about EVERYTHING by the astro-sign--I'm an Aquarius.

--Bugs? Gross. I live in California, not Florida, for a reason.
--Kick boxing? I'm too old to raise my leg that high and not look like a rusty robot.
--Girl Scout camp? CHECK! We had a tornado when I went in 4th grade and out tent collapsed in the wind. We got soaked RUNNING to the bus to take us to the YMCA shelter.
--Beach? AAhhh, yes, agreed. I live an hour from the coast and it's too far.
--Mac N Cheese? Uh-huh. Blue box, anyone?

This is fantastic and I am really very happy to have your book soon-to-be wearing the Decadent logo. Highland cover model? Wow. (*whispers* Did I tell you my husband married me in a kilt?)

    1. Heather, one trip to Florida near did me in. Bugs as large as cats there. *shudder*
I'm with you on the kick boxing. I'd pop a vein in my head if I tried to raise it too high.
LOL on your girl scout camp experience. These things scar you for life, I swear.
I could go right down the list: My Medieval Knight Cover Model, My Werewolf Cover Model, My Cowboy Cover Model...

Oh, swoon. Married in a kilt. He's a keeper! I'm also happy to be with Decadent. Speaking of, I have pre-edits to do! Thanks for stopping by, Heather!

  4. LOL this cracked me up. And I cringed at your Girl Guide story (spiders.. *shudder*). There are things I'd be willing to do for a guy, but camping is NOT one of them. To paraphrase a recent Dolly Parton line, "God didn't make hotels so they could be empty!"

On the flip side, most of the romance cover models I know are really friendly guys and are more than happy to hang out with us overweight, non-athletic, (close-to) middle-aged ladies. (When does "middle age" start again?) I'm just not sure I'd want to stick to eating the crap most of them eat!

    1. Seleste, Oh I so agree. I'm pretty much game for anything, but camping is OUT. I don't care if it's a fancy RV. Dolly is bang on. Hotels for me all the way. If campgrounds ever got room service, I might reconsider. MIGHT.

I got that impression from reading blogs, FB etc, these guys are great! I assume middle age starts around 40. Yikes, I'm past that~
Like I said, I admire their discipline. I'll pass on the alfalfa sprout shakes. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Karyn,

Hilarious! I actually love camping. Oddly it's my husband that's not the outdoorsy type. Your books sounds great! Can't wait to read it-and drool over the cover. LOL
